Erdogan Urges Open Dialogue, Stronger Ties Between Turkey, Greece

(MENAFN) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized on Wednesday that Türkiye and Greece must continue engaging with one another through open communication, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the two neighboring nations and NATO allies.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Ankara following talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Erdogan underscored the shared responsibility of both countries to maintain steady dialogue. He stated: “Türkiye and Greece are working to raise bilateral trade to $10 billion, up from nearly $7 billion last year.”

He further explained that representatives from business councils of both nations convened the same day to discuss potential areas for expanded economic collaboration and new investment prospects.

Reflecting on his trip to Athens on December 7, 2023, for the fifth session of the High-Level Cooperation Council, Erdogan recalled that both governments had reaffirmed their determination to sustain communication and strengthen ties through the Athens Declaration.

According to statements made at the time, this framework committed both sides to improving relations and fostering continued engagement. He noted that ongoing high-level exchanges have helped create a constructive environment conducive to further advancement.

The Turkish president also pointed out that discussions during the latest meeting included frank and transparent exchanges regarding longstanding disagreements in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Although acknowledging the complexity of the disputes between the two countries, Erdogan stressed that such matters are not beyond resolution. He indicated that progress is achievable when guided by international law, mutual goodwill, meaningful dialogue, and a collective determination to reach common ground. Both leaders, he added, recognized the importance of preserving open channels of communication and promoting a forward-looking, positive agenda in bilateral relations.
