Greece Flights Begin Recovering After Massive Disruption

(MENAFN) Greek aviation operations began recovering Sunday afternoon following a massive disruption that paralyzed all airports nationwide and grounded both arriving and departing aircraft.

Authorities have yet to determine what triggered the sweeping system failure. A Greek public broadcaster reported that an alternative communication system was put in place, allowing some flights to depart.

The broadcaster added that a comprehensive joint investigation is underway, with the participation of the country's civil aviation authority and other relevant bodies.

The broadcaster indicated that authorities had approved merely 35 transit flights through Greek airspace at that point, while the overwhelming majority of flights scheduled for Greek destinations were rerouted to airports in neighboring Türkiye.

Greece's dominant telecommunications provider OTE issued a statement rejecting responsibility for the crisis, announcing the disruption was not caused by a technical failure in circuits it owns, contradicting earlier media reports that had attributed the problem to a circuit malfunction.

The incident marks one of the most significant aviation infrastructure breakdowns in recent Greek history, leaving thousands of travelers stranded and forcing airlines to scramble for alternative routing solutions across the eastern Mediterranean region.
